What is Formula One Racing?

Formula One racing is the highest class of single-seat auto racing sanctioned by the Fédération Internationale de l’Automobile (FIA). The FIA Formula One World Championship has been one of the premier forms of racing around the world since its inaugural season in 1950. The word “formula” in the name refers to a set of rules that all participants’ cars must meet. The F1 season consists of a series of races, known as Grands Prix (from French, originally meaning great prizes), held on purpose-built circuits and public roads.

The Teams of Formula One Racing

There are currently ten teams competing in the FIA Formula One World Championship. Each team is allowed two cars which compete in each grand prix. The teams are: Mercedes, Ferrari, Red Bull, Haas, Toro Rosso, Renault, McLaren, Sauber, Williams, and Force India.

Team McLaren

McLaren Racing Limited, trading as McLaren F1, is a British Formula One racing team based at the McLaren Technology Centre, Woking, Surrey, England. McLaren is best known as a Formula One constructor but has also competed and won in the Indianapolis 500 and Canadian-American Challenge Cup (Can-Am). The team is the second oldest active Formula One team after Ferrari, where they compete as McLaren F1 Team. McLaren won eight Constructors’ Championships between 1974 and 1991. The team’s first race victory came in 1968 at the Belgian Grand Prix.

One of the most notable things about Team McLaren is their long-standing relationship with Honda. After a successful period in the late 1980s and early 1990s, Honda withdrew from Formula One at the end of 1992, just as McLaren were beginning to dominate the sport with Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost. In 2015, Honda returned to Formula One as an engine supplier for McLaren.

Team Ferrari

Ferrari is the oldest surviving and most successful Formula One racing team, having competed in every World Championship since the 1950 Formula One season. The team was founded by Enzo Ferrari, initially to race cars produced by Alfa Romeo, though by 1947 Ferrari had begun building its own cars. Among its successes, Ferrari has captured 16 Constructors’ Championships (including 8 consecutive victories between 1999 and 2006), as well as 15 Drivers’ Championships (with drivers Danilo Escalante, Juan Pablo Montoya, Kimi Raikkonen, Fernando Alonso and Sebastian Vettel). Ferrari also holds the record for the most wins at Monaco Grand Prix (16) and has the highest number of podium finishes of any team in Formula One history (853).

The team is also noted for its passionate supporter base known as the “Tifosi”. The Italian Grand Prix at Monza is regarded as Ferrari’s home race, and Scuderia Ferrari has a strong following throughout motorsport—so much so that Enzo Ferrari was once asked whether he regretted not making his business a public company so that fans could buy shares. He replied “No! I hear they’re worth more than my cars!”.

Team Mercedes

Team Mercedes is a German-based team that competes in the Formula One World Championship. The team was founded by Mercedes-Benz in 2010, and they made their debut in the 2011 season.

The team is currently being led by Lewis Hamilton and Valtteri Bottas, who are considered to be one of the strongest driver pairings on the grid. In 2018, the team won both the Constructors’ and Drivers’ championships, etched their names into Formula One history.
